Staff Editorial: WANTED–More School Spirit

Not to be the bearers of bad news, but we have noticed the school spirit at LHS has been decreasing every year. The student section at some of the fall sports games, especially the away ones, was pathetic to say the least.

The class of 2011, along with every class before them, organized a theme for each game, and almost everyone dressed up to support our Wildcat athletes. Were they the last grades to care about school spirit?

Middle school girls basketball season has started, and if you go to one of their games, you will see a student section that stands up throughout the entire game yelling offense and defense chants. If you go to a middle school pep rally, 90% of the students participate and yell with the cheerleaders.

Why is it that when you get to high school, all of a sudden you’re “too cool” to cheer and show a little bit of school pride? News flash:  Get over yourself, no one is that cool, so we should all be able to support our fellow classmates.

There was a pep rally on a Friday back in September. The entire student body sat there and literally just stared at the cheerleaders. People didn’t even stand up for the Wildcat Rumble! What has happened over the years? Since when does LMS have more school spirit than we do?

Even little things, like our class chants—no one does them!! Again, the class of 2010 always started their class chant first. They would stand up and yell, “Twenty ten, twenty ten, twenty, twenty, twenty ten,” at every school assembly, or pep rally. The class of 2011 also started their class chant last year, “Double one, double one, double, double, double one.” Where is the class of 2012? Or why aren’t the juniors yelling, “Thirteen, thirteen, twenty, twenty thirteen”?

Spirit week. It’s supposed to be fun for everyone. Student council organizes spirit days and students, teachers and administrators are all expected to dress up join in on the fun that homecoming week brings. It seems like each year, fewer and fewer students participate in dressing up. There are those students who go all out and end up individually earning points for their class. Good for them!! Why can’t more students show that kind of enthusiasm?

It’s sad that our school spirit has gone downhill, but let’s bring it back. We need to have theme nights to add to the excitement of each sports event and the student section should chant throughout the whole game. In order for this to happen, we need students to show up.

The winter sports season has started so let’s amp up the student section at all of the games and show everyone how fun the students at LHS really are.
